I am a photographer based in Lancaster, UK. I am a co-founder of Assembly Arts and I run the Lancaster Photography Darkroom. I have a particular interest in social documentary and landscape photography.
With a background in photography and pedagogy I have taught in a number of art colleges and institutions, including as Course Leader BA(Hons) Fine Art Photography at the University of Gloucestershire, Course Leader for the MA Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice programme at Arts University Plymouth and Curriculum Leader for the BA(Hons) Photography programme at Blackpool School of Arts. I have a PhD in Digital Technologies and Photographic Archives, along with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
Having founded Assembly Arts in 2023 I set up the Assembly Photographic Collective. With over thirty members, the Assembly Arts Photographic Collective provides a supportive and collaborative space in which photographers in the Lancaster region can share their practice. The focus is on photography that embraces social, cultural, experimental and alternative techniques, catering to a diverse range of perspectives on work. Underpinned by an ethos embracing a kind and respectful attitude, the group shares knowledge and experiences pertaining to photographic practice, including exploring mutually agreed topics and techniques. Members have opportunities to expand and promote their practice, including through such activities as group exhibitions, photographic field trips and events.
In addition to my photography, teaching and research interests, I help run my partners architectural glass practice. In 2005 we established Sarah Galloway Associates creating large scale glass artworks across the UK. We have successfully completed many important and prestigious projects, including a memorial artwork for Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, the windows for West Leigh Baptist Church, the West Window for Sunfields Methodist Church, the art glass facade for Square Chapel Arts Centre and public realm artworks for Oban and Blackburn town centres. In addition to being responsible for promoting Sarah’s artworks, when needed I am happy to help with the practical aspects of making the glass, often employing photography.
